HIQ holds a workshop on IPv6
Mogadishu, June 10, 2026 – The National Communications Authority (HIQ) and the National IPv6 Center, hosted by the Jamhuuriya University, jointly held a workshop today on Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), attended by internet service providers, universities, ICT professionals, and other stakeholders, to discuss the future of internet communication infrastructure and the implementation of IPv6 in Somalia.
This workshop is of great importance to Somalia, as the currently used protocol (IPv4) has run out of internet addresses, which poses a challenge to the expansion of digital connectivity. IPv6 offers an uncountable number of addresses and enables the growth of future technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), e-commerce, and modern social services.
“Our vision has always been that Somalia should not lag behind the technological changes in the world,” said the Director General of HIQ, Mr. Mustafa Yaasiin Sheekh. “Today we are planning not only for the current internet needs but also thinking about how future generations will access modern technology and benefit from the growth of the digital economy.”
Mustafa Yaasiin added that what was once a goal to establish the National IPv6 Center has now become a reality that supports this process.
The Chairman of Jamhuuriya University of Science and Technology (JUST), Eng. Maxamed Axmed Maxamuud, emphasized the importance of preparing the new generation of ICT professionals. “Universities play a significant role in developing knowledge, research, and innovation related to IPv6, as well as enhancing students to participate in the digital transformation of the country,” he said.
During the workshop, various experts presented topics including the need for a national IPv6 strategy, technical implementation and transition processes, policies and governance, and the necessary political frameworks for successful implementation.
This workshop has become a platform to enhance awareness about IPv6, strengthen stakeholder collaboration, and support the goals of digital transformation in Somalia.
