African Union Expresses Concern Over Ebola Outbreak Resurgence in Eastern Congo and Uganda

ADDIS ABABA — The African Union has expressed strong concern over the Ebola virus disease (EVD) which has re-emerged in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, warning of the increasing risk of the disease spreading in the region.

Chairman of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, stated that this situation is critical and requires urgent cooperation at both regional and international levels.

He praised the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, as well as frontline health workers, for their efforts in controlling the spread of the disease.

Additionally, the African Union welcomed the preventive measures being taken by neighboring countries, particularly South Sudan, to prevent the disease from spreading across regional borders.

The African Union stated that it fully supports the efforts led by Africa CDC, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and other global partners.

The Chairman emphasized that protecting the lives of African people is the top priority, and there is a need to strengthen preparedness, share health data, and respond swiftly to emerging situations.

Finally, the African Union reiterated its commitment to strengthening health systems and preventing infectious diseases on the continent.
