Piracy Returns to Somalia’s Coast

Mogadishu (WDN) — The European Union’s anti-piracy naval mission, Operation Atalanta, has revealed that four commercial vessels hijacked by Somali pirates remain under pirate control, with 67 crew members still being held hostage off the northern coast of Somalia.

The disclosure underscores the most serious resurgence of Somali piracy in years and raises fresh alarm over the security of one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors linking the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Indian Ocean.

According to Operation Atalanta, the hijacked vessels are anchored near Somalia’s northern coastline within Somali territorial waters and are being continuously monitored by international naval forces. The mission said it is working closely with Somali security institutions, but acknowledged that because the ships are being held close to shore, any successful rescue operation depends heavily on the capabilities and cooperation of local Somali authorities.

The pirates’ ability to hold multiple vessels simultaneously represents a dramatic reminder that the threat many believed had largely faded after years of international naval patrols has once again become a dangerous reality.
