Photos: Deadly Attack on Mosque in the United States

San Diego (Caasimada Online) — Three men were killed in a shooting that occurred on Monday at a mosque in San Diego, California, while two suspects in the attack also died, according to city police.

The shooting took place at the Islamic Center of San Diego, recognized as the largest mosque in San Diego County. The center is located approximately nine miles north of downtown San Diego.

San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl stated that the two suspects in the attack are believed to be young men, and the case is being investigated as a hate crime. Police have not yet released the names of the deceased or the suspects.

U.S. media, citing a message from mosque leadership, reported that one of the deceased was a security guard. Police have not officially released the identities of the deceased.

Footage captured from the scene showed more than ten children holding hands, being escorted away from the mosque, as the area was surrounded by numerous police vehicles.

The mosque is located in a neighborhood characterized by homes, apartments, small markets, and restaurants owned by the Middle Eastern community.

The Islamic Center of San Diego houses Al Rashid School, which, according to the center's information, offers lessons in Arabic language, Islamic studies, and the Quran.

The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that the governor was informed of the situation, thanking the emergency responders who arrived on the scene, and urged the community to follow the guidance of security agencies.

“We thank the emergency responders on the scene, who are working to protect the community, and we encourage people to follow the guidance of local authorities,” Newsom's office wrote on X.

The Islamic Center of San Diego states that its mission is not only to serve the Muslim community but also to support the underprivileged, promote community education, and work with people of various faiths on charitable and community service issues.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned the attack, stating that no one should fear worshipping at a mosque or learning at a school. CAIR stated that it is still gathering further details about the incident.

The attack occurred as Muslims entered the holiest days of the Islamic year, coinciding with the beginning of the month of Dhul-Hijjah and the Hajj season.

Police stated that the investigation is still ongoing.
