US moves to block UN funding for Somalia peace mission

The United States has informed the African Union (AU) that it intends to block the use of United Nations funding for the AU peacekeeping mission in Somalia, a decision that could significantly affect the future of the force.

According to a diplomatic note seen by Reuters, Washington has said it will oppose any UN expenditure supporting the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), raising concerns over the mission’s long-term viability.

AUSSOM, which replaced the previous AU mission in Somalia, has faced persistent financial challenges. The mission operated on a budget of approximately $190 million last year, but officials have warned of a widening funding gap.

The United States is one of the largest contributors to the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), which provides logistical assistance, medical services and transport for AU forces. UNSOS is expected to have a budget exceeding $500 million this year.
