Details of a crucial meeting between the opposition and the international community in Xalane

Mogadishu (Caasimada Online) – Representatives of the international community held a special meeting today with the Somali Rescue Council, amid ongoing political tensions arising from election issues and the term of the Federal Government of Somalia.

This meeting was attended remotely by the leaders of the Puntland and Jubbaland administrations, who are among the politicians with significant differences regarding the Federal Government, and are in disagreement over the election process and constitutional amendments.

Information from the meeting indicates that the international community is focusing on persuading the political parties in Somalia to continue discussions, in order to reach an election process that is agreed upon by all political stakeholders in the country.

The international community also urged the Federal Government and the opposition to avoid any actions that could exacerbate the political conflict, emphasizing the importance of reaching an agreement based on consultation and political understanding.

The ongoing tension has escalated after the Federal Government clearly stated that its term is five years, and the election will be one person, one vote, following the breakdown of the talks in Xalane, where government leaders and opposition leaders had met for several days.

The opposition has also engaged in consultations regarding preventing government actions, while representatives of the international community are calling on both sides to return to negotiations.

Additionally, the Federal Government of Somalia announced on Friday that the country has entered a phase of transitioning to a democratic system based on the principle of one person, one vote, after the opposition talks ended without results.

The government stated that the opposition politicians presented a different perspective on public elections, which it claimed contradicts the fundamental rights of citizens to vote and be elected.

“The government shares with the Somali people that the country will hold free and fair elections, transparent, and in accordance with the constitution, the laws of the country, and the political program promised by the government,” the government statement said.

The government also stated that the door for negotiations and consultations remains open, clearly stating that there will never be a compromise on returning the election to the public.
