International Mediators Enter Final Phase of Somalia Talks as Hope for Political Breakthrough Begins to Fade

Mogadishu (WDN) – Ambassadors representing Somalia’s principal international partners met with leaders of the opposition-aligned Future Council on Monday inside the heavily fortified Halane compound, delivering what participants described as a candid assessment of the country’s deepening political crisis and the narrowing window for a negotiated settlement.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, the meeting brought together representatives of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and the African Union, who shared their growing concern over Somalia’s prolonged political deadlock and the uncertainty surrounding the country’s transition.

The Future Council delegation was represented in person by former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and MP Abdi Hassan Cosoble, while Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam (Ahmed Madobe), and MP Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame joined the discussions via video conference.

Diplomatic sources said the international partners informed the opposition leaders that the mediation process has now entered what they described as its final phase, with negotiations moving beyond technical discussions to direct engagement among the principal political decision-makers.
