Renewed Clan Fighting Erupts in Sanaag as Peace Efforts Continue to Falter

Erigavo (WDN) – Fresh clan fighting erupted on Tuesday in the Laashimo area near Erigavo in Somalia’s Sanaag region, underscoring the persistence of a conflict that has repeatedly defied mediation efforts and left communities trapped in an apparently endless cycle of violence. According to local reports, the latest clashes resulted in deaths and injuries, although the exact casualty figures have not yet been independently verified.

The renewed fighting comes only days after Puntland authorities withdrew security forces that had been stationed in the area, where they had been positioned between militias from the two rival clans in an effort to prevent further bloodshed. The timing of the withdrawal has raised fresh concerns about the fragile security situation in the region, with fears that the absence of a neutral security presence may have contributed to the rapid resurgence of hostilities.

A member of the Puntland Parliament appealed to both sides to immediately halt the fighting and embrace dialogue, warning that continued violence would only deepen the suffering of local communities and further destabilize the region.
