Revenge Killings Raise Alarm as Clan Feuds Claim More Somali Lives

Galkayo (WDN) — The killing of innocent Somalis in apparent clan-related revenge attacks is raising renewed concern, as murderers frequently evade justice and arrests remain rare in many cases.

The latest incidents include the killing of Somali journalist Mohamed Aweys Muudey, popularly known as “Boqorka Bartamaha,” who died in Germany after reportedly being stabbed by another Somali man following an argument.

Muudey was living in Germany, where he had moved in 2017. He was reportedly attacked with a knife in the city of Darmstadt and was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but later died.

The circumstances surrounding the stabbing, including the motive, remain under investigation. Initial reports said the suspect became involved in an argument or disagreement with the journalist before allegedly stabbing him.

The killing has added to growing concerns about the vulnerability of Somalis to violent disputes that can escalate from personal disagreements into fatal attacks.

Arrest Made in Mudug Murder

In Puntland’s Mudug region, police said they had arrested Zakariye Abdiqadir Hirsi, who is accused of killing Abdirahman Hassan Yusuf in the Tuulo-Xabiibo area three days ago.

According to Mudug police, the suspect was arrested in Dudun, in Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State. The operation reportedly involved the suspect’s relatives and security forces from the Somali Regional State, who helped locate and apprehend him before he was handed over to the authorities.

The arrest stands out because successful efforts to apprehend suspects in murder cases remain relatively uncommon, particularly where killings are linked to clan revenge and retaliatory violence.

Meanwhile, authorities have yet to announce the arrest of those responsible for the killing of businessman Sheikh Ahmed Yusuf Farah, known as Haamay, who was shot dead in Galkayo on September 8.

His killing remains unresolved, adding to a growing list of cases in which victims have been killed while perpetrators remain at large.

A Cycle That Keeps Producing Victims

Mudug has witnessed repeated killings reportedly linked to clan-based revenge and longstanding disputes, with victims including community elders, businessmen and other civilians.

The danger extends beyond the original parties to a dispute. Once a killing occurs, retaliation can trigger another killing, creating a cycle in which individuals with no direct involvement can become targets.

The central concern is not simply the number of killings, but the apparent difficulty of bringing those responsible to justice. When suspects remain at large, families and clans can be left to seek their own form of justice, potentially deepening the cycle of retaliation.

The arrest of one suspect in the Abdirahman Hassan Yusuf case demonstrates that perpetrators can be brought before the law when security agencies and communities cooperate. But for families of victims whose killers remain unidentified or unarrested, justice remains painfully out of reach.

The growing challenge for Puntland and communities across Mudug is therefore clear: breaking the cycle of revenge requires not only preventing the next killing, but ensuring that those responsible for previous killings face the full force of the law.
