Somali Pirates Seize Fourth Vessel in Three Months as Maritime Security Fears Grow

EYL (WDN) – Somali piracy appears to be making a troubling comeback after another commercial vessel hijacked off the coast of Yemen was brought to the Puntland coastline, underscoring growing concerns that pirate networks are once again expanding their operations across the western Indian Ocean.

The cargo vessel Asana, sailing under the Tanzanian flag, arrived off the coast of Eyl district in Somalia’s Nugaal region after being seized by armed pirates last Friday in waters off Yemen.

According to a resident in the nearby community of Maraya, food supplies and weapons were delivered overnight to the armed group holding the vessel, suggesting the hijackers are preparing for a potentially prolonged standoff while awaiting ransom negotiations.

The Asana is carrying 20 crew members, including eight German nationals and ten Filipino nationals, while the nationalities of the remaining crew members have not been disclosed. The hijacking marks the fourth commercial vessel captured by Somali pirates in just three months, signaling what maritime security experts fear could be the beginning of a broader resurgence in piracy after years of relative calm.
