NAIROBI — Somalia took part in the 175th meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPR) of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), where delegates discussed environmental protection, climate change and strengthening international cooperation.
During the meeting, Somalia outlined its national priorities for addressing the impacts of climate change, sustainable water management, improving environmental data and implementing long-term solutions to reduce climate-related risks.
The Somali government welcomed UNEP support and initiatives, including the Jowhar Offstream Storage Programme and Somalia’s National Cooling Action Plan, describing them as important measures for strengthening environmental resilience and promoting sustainable development.
Somalia’s ambassador to Kenya and permanent representative to UNEP, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, told the meeting that building resilience to climate change, managing water resources sustainably and protecting the environment were key national priorities.
Jabril also stressed the need for African countries to have a greater role in environmental and climate-related decision-making. He called for stronger South-South cooperation, greater institutional capacity and access to sustainable and predictable financing for climate action.
The meeting comes as Somalia prepares for the possible impact of storms and strong winds expected to affect the country. Jabril outlined government preparations to mitigate the risks posed by the anticipated weather events and called on the international community to support Somalia’s disaster preparedness and climate resilience efforts.
