Somalia: Puntland forces intercept more than 100 federal military recruits in Galkayo

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Puntland security forces have intercepted two military trucks carrying more than 100 recruits who were reportedly travelling to a federal government-run military training camp, in a fresh security flashpoint between Puntland and Somalia’s federal authorities.

The two vehicles were stopped on Monday in northern Galkayo, where Puntland forces reportedly ordered the recruits to disembark and took them into custody.

Videos circulating on social media appeared to show Puntland security personnel surrounding the two trucks and removing the occupants from the vehicles. The footage could not independently establish the precise circumstances surrounding the interception.

The recruits are reportedly from southern Mudug, an area under the control of neighboring Galmudug state, and were travelling to the Hanan Bure military academy in the Galgadud region. According to local officials, the convoy apparently took the wrong direction and ended up in northern Galkayo, where it was intercepted by Puntland forces.

Number of recruits remains unclear

The exact number of recruits involved has not been officially established.

Some local journalists have reported that as many as 160 recruits were travelling in the two trucks, while the Caasimada Online news website put the number at approximately 100.

Neither Puntland authorities nor Somalia’s federal government had publicly confirmed the number of recruits or provided an official account of the incident at the time of publication.

The discrepancy means the size of the group remains uncertain, although all available accounts indicate that more than 100 recruits may have been involved.

Interception comes amid Puntland–Mogadishu tensions

The incident comes as relations between Puntland and the federal government in Mogadishu have deteriorated sharply, with disagreements between the two sides increasingly taking on a military dimension.

The dispute has developed into armed confrontations in recent months. Puntland security forces have moved against federal military units operating in areas under Puntland’s control, detaining federal soldiers, taking possession of their weapons and placing personnel who surrendered under the command of regional security forces.

Those developments have completely ended the federal government’s security presence in Puntland and deepened the dispute between the two sides.

The interception of the recruits adds another potentially sensitive dimension to that confrontation, particularly because the group was reportedly travelling toward a military training facility associated with the federal government.

Galkayo adds a delicate local dimension

The fate of the recruits remains unclear.

Their detention could prove particularly sensitive in Galkayo, a city divided between Puntland and Galmudug and situated in a region where political, security and clan dynamics frequently intersect.

The recruits are reportedly drawn largely from clans with communities in southern Galkayo. Their presence in northern Galkayo, therefore, carries a local dimension that extends beyond the broader political dispute between Puntland and the federal government.

It remains unclear whether Puntland will release the recruits, continue to hold them or transfer them to another authority.
