For months, Somalia’s political crisis has been the subject of intensive international mediation. Yet the gap between the parties remains as wide as ever, and there is growing evidence that one side is using the process not to reach agreement but to buy time for unilateral actions. The Federal Government of Somalia, under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, continues to press ahead with the implementation of the unilaterally altered constitution and regional elections that critics describe as pre-determined, while participating in mediation that appears designed to create the illusion of dialogue.
The latest round of high-stakes political talks opened in Mogadishu in early July 2026, bringing together the Federal Government and the opposition Somali Future Council. Unlike previous rounds, the negotiations are being facilitated with the direct involvement of Turkey, ambassadors representing several Western nations, the European Union, and the United Nations. A decisive session is set to take place on July 20, 2026.
However, expectations are not merely cautious, they are pessimistic . Previous mediation efforts have repeatedly ended with optimistic communiqués but little tangible progress. More troubling, there is a growing recognition that the federal government is participating in these talks not to find common ground but to create diplomatic cover for its unilateral political agenda. As one analysis notes, the mediation “is not a neutral peace process. It is a geopolitical gambit, designed to freeze the clock while Villa Somalia consolidates power under the cover of ‘inclusive dialogue’.”
