Turkey’s New Armored Vehicles Arrive in Somalia as Political Questions Overshadow Military Cooperation

Mogadishu (WDN) – The appearance of Turkish-made ACV-15 armored infantry fighting vehicles on the frontlines in central Somalia has reignited a broader political debate over Ankara’s increasingly visible military role in the country, with critics questioning not the equipment itself but the timing of its deployment and the political context surrounding it.

The armored vehicles were recently spotted in Sumadaale, a strategic area in the Middle Shabelle region that Somali government forces say they recaptured from Al-Shabaab during ongoing military operations. Images circulating from the battlefield show the tracked armored carriers transporting government troops as operations continue in the area.

Turkish made ACV-15 armored vehicle

The ACV-15, manufactured by FNSS Defence Systems of Türkiye, is one of the Turkish military industry’s best-known armored fighting vehicles. Designed to transport infantry safely through hostile environments, the vehicle carries between 10 and 13 soldiers while providing protection against heavy gunfire and artillery fragments. It can also be fitted with heavy machine guns or remotely operated weapon systems, making it a valuable asset in conventional military operations.
