Mogadishu (WDN) – Somalia’s capital descended further into uncertainty on Wednesday as armed confrontations entered a second consecutive day, exposing the depth of the country’s political crisis and raising fears of a broader breakdown in security. Fighting erupted across several districts of Mogadishu as forces aligned with the federal government clashed with security personnel loyal to opposition leaders and former senior officials.

The violence has triggered alarm among Somali citizens, opposition figures, and international partners, who fear that the country may be entering one of its most dangerous political confrontations in recent years. As fighting intensified, reports emerged that prominent traditional elders and community leaders became trapped inside the residence of Member of Parliament Mohamed Abukar Ali Jaafar, where fierce clashes had been reported since Wednesday.

Among those reportedly caught in the area were respected elders including the Murusade Ugaas, the Mudulood Ugaas, the Mudulood Imam, and veteran elder Mohamed Hassan Haad, alongside other influential community figures. Security officials were said to be working to establish safe passage for the elders, who were unable to leave due to heavy gunfire and ongoing exchanges of fire between government-backed forces and security personnel loyal to former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

The exact nature of the evacuation efforts remains unclear, although sources indicated that negotiations were underway to remove the elders from the combat zone without further escalation
