Why the U.S. Military Presence in Bossaso Matters: A Strategic Shield on the Gulf of Aden

Bosasso, Somalia (WDN) — Bosasso, a strategically located port city on Somalia’s Gulf of Aden coast, occupies an increasingly important position in Red Sea–Gulf of Aden trade and commerce. Its proximity to one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors gives the port significant potential as a regional gateway for commercial shipping, trade, and investment, linking Somalia to markets across the Red Sea, Arabian Peninsula, and wider region.

The city is becoming increasingly strategically important as the war between Iran and the United States drags on. A Lebanese website closely associated with Hezbollah’s political and ideological outlook has drawn attention to the U.S. military facility in Somalia’s Puntland region, highlighting the growing strategic importance of Bossaso and the expanding security relationship between Washington and Puntland.

The website Al-Khanadeq, in a report published on August 26 under the title “Target Card,” focused on Bossaso’s location along the Gulf of Aden, its proximity to Yemen and its position near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a critical maritime chokepoint linking the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean. The report speculated that an expanded U.S. facility could support aerial operations, logistics and potentially future operations related to Yemen.

There is, however, no publicly available official evidence that the United States plans to use the Bossaso facility to launch attacks against Yemen. There is also no confirmed evidence that Hezbollah or the Houthis have decided to target the facility. The report nevertheless underscores the growing strategic importance of Bossaso at a time when security cooperation between the United States and Puntland is expanding.
