Al-Shabaab militants launched coordinated attacks on two Kenyan military positions in the Fiino and Carabiya areas on the outskirts of Mandera town in Kenya’s North Eastern region on Saturday, triggering heavy exchanges of gunfire that left the border zone on high alert.

The assaults targeted Kenyan Defence Force outposts near the Somali border, a volatile corridor where Al-Shabaab retains a significant operational presence across the Jubaland regions of southern Somalia and frequently stages cross-border raids. The attacks come as Kenyan security forces have intensified counter-terrorism operations along the frontier, with intelligence-led raids killing 11 militants in Mandera County just two weeks ago .

Militants struck the first position in the Fiino area, targeting a Kenyan military base there, according to local sources. A second attack followed in the Carabiya area, also within Mandera’s outskirts, where additional Al-Shabaab fighters engaged Kenyan forces.
