The International Community Receives Report on Somalia's Elections

Mogadishu – The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission and Boundary, Mr. Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, held an informative meeting with the ambassadors and representatives of the international community, providing an update on the progress made in the ongoing one-person, one-vote electoral process in the country. The meeting was attended by the ambassadors of the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Turkey, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan , and Egypt , as well as representatives from the United Nations, the African Union , and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

This meeting is significant as it demonstrates how the Commission is sharing with the international community the progress of the elections, amidst international support aimed at strengthening the democratic process. The Chairman stated that the local council elections in the Benadir Region have been successfully completed, and that similar elections have taken place in the South West, Galmudug regions, and that the Hirshabelle plan is ongoing.

The Chairman noted that the Somali people have had the opportunity to elect their political representatives for the first time in nearly 57 years , which is an important step towards strengthening democracy in the country.

The ambassadors and representatives of the international community welcomed the progress made and confirmed their support for efforts to strengthen a democratic process that returns electoral power to the Somali people. They also stated that they are working with the Commission to implement inclusive, transparent, and credible elections.
