Ethiopian Forces Withdraw from Buurhakaba, Somalia Takes Over Security

Ethiopian forces part of the AUSSOM mission have left the city of Buurhakaba after nearly 12 years, with security in the city handed over to Somali forces.

The Ethiopian troops, part of the African Union mission AUSSOM, have officially withdrawn from the city of Buurhakaba in the Bay region, after nearly 12 years of presence. The responsibility for the security of the city has been taken over by the Somali National Army, which is now responsible for maintaining peace and stability in the area.

This withdrawal is significant as it marks a major change in the country's security dynamics, with the Federal Government of Somalia gradually taking over security responsibilities in various regions. This move comes at a time when the AUSSOM mission is facing severe financial challenges, with expectations that foreign troops will vacate additional cities in the coming weeks.

The Ethiopian forces have been in control of Buurhakaba since 2014, participating in operations to strengthen local security. Their departure comes as the African Union is welcoming the end of its current mandate on December 31, 2026, with any extension of the mission dependent on decisions by the United Nations Security Council and the availability of sustainable funding. The Federal Government of Somalia is also requesting that the troop withdrawal be delayed by 2 years to strengthen the capacity of the national forces.

Federal government officials are concerned that the withdrawal of foreign troops could create security chaos, especially if Somali forces do not receive the support they need. Additionally, this decision comes at a time of significant concerns regarding logistical routes being compromised, which could impact the future of the AUSSOM mission.
