The Federal Government of Somalia Signs Contract for the Study and Design of the Galkaayo Elguula Road

Mogadishu – The Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing of the Federal Government of Somalia today hosted a ceremony for the signing of the contract for the services of study, design, environmental and social impact assessment, and preparation of contract documents for the Galkaayo–Elguula section, which is 100 kilometers long.

The ceremony was chaired by the Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, Mr. Ayuub Ismaaciil Yuusuf, and attended by the Minister of Defense of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Axmed Macallin Fiqi, the Minister of Public Works of Galmudug, Mr. Axmed Dhiblaawe Kaasir, officials from IBS Bank, GOB Community Organisation, and the company KKATT Consult Limited.

The Galkaayo–Hobyo road is recognized as one of the most important infrastructures in central Somalia, as it connects the interior regions with the ports and beaches of the Indian Ocean. This project is expected to play a significant role in boosting trade, facilitating the movement of people and goods, enhancing security, and strengthening the economic integration of the country.

The commencement of the study and design of the Galkaayo–Elguula section is an important step towards the implementation of the overall Galkaayo–Hobyo road project, which is a total of 260 kilometers long.

The Minister of Public Works, Mr. Ayuub Ismaaciil Yuusuf, stated that this project is of particular importance for the development of the country’s economic infrastructure, emphasizing that the Federal Government of Somalia is committed to accelerating investment in economic infrastructure and strengthening cooperation with the Galmudug Government and development partners.

For his part, the Minister of Defense, Mr. Axmed Macallin Fiqi, praised the efforts to implement this project, noting that this road is vital for the development, connectivity, and stability of the country.

The signed contract assigns KKATT Consult Limited the responsibility for carrying out technical studies, preliminary and detailed design, environmental and social impact assessment, and preparation of contract documents for the Galkaayo–Elguula section.

This project is part of the Somalia Road Infrastructure Development Program (RIPSOM), funded by the African Development Bank and the European Union, and implemented by the Ministry of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing of the Federal Government of Somalia.
