Chairperson of the African Union Arrives in New York to Participate in the 81st Session of the United Nations

New York – Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, accompanied by Deputy Chairperson, Ms. Salma Malika Hadadi, and a delegation of African Union Chairpersons and heads of AU agencies, has arrived in New York to participate in the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).

The UNGA81 session will be held under the theme "Restoring Trust, Managing Change: The United Nations at 75 for All." In this regard, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission is expected to amplify Africa's voice and priorities, focusing on three key messages.

Firstly, Africa must have a strong voice in shaping global decisions. The African Union will advocate for a multilateral system with broad representation, including meaningful African representation within the United Nations Security Council and international financial institutions.

Secondly, Africa is taking significant responsibility for shaping its future. The African Union will highlight Africa's leadership and ownership in areas of peace and security, continental integration, and economic transformation, while promoting the reform of institutions and economic independence.

Thirdly, Africa plays a crucial role in addressing global challenges. The African Union sees Africa not only as a beneficiary of global cooperation but also as a strategic actor and partner in shaping global solutions, ranging from peace and security, addressing climate change, global health, trade, technology, and sustainable development.

While in New York, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission is expected to hold high-level meetings, including a meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General, as well as meetings with heads of state and business leaders.

The African Union delegation will also participate in side events planned for the High-Level Week, focusing on advancing Africa's strategic priorities and strengthening cooperation towards a multilateral, effective, and inclusive global system.
