Chairperson of the African Union Participating in the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly

New York – Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Mr. Mahmoud Ali Yusuf, accompanied by the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the Chairpersons of the African Union, is participating in the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, taking place in New York.

Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Yusuf emphasized that this year's theme, "Restoring Trust, Managing Change: The United Nations Delivering for All," is particularly relevant to the increasingly complex and emerging global challenges.

He stated that the General Assembly session is an important opportunity to reaffirm the centrality of multilateral cooperation, strengthen global partnerships, and promote a multilateral system that responds to the needs of the world, equitable, representative, and effective.

The Chairperson also highlighted the importance of aligning these efforts with Africa's long-standing call for meaningful reform of international governance institutions, including the United Nations Security Council.

Regarding Africa, Chairperson Youssouf stated that the Assembly is an important platform to advance the continent's priorities, strengthen Africa-United Nations cooperation, and develop joint solutions to shared challenges in peace and security, sustainable development, and global governance.

He also stressed the importance of African representation and that the continent's voice is prominently featured in global decision-making. In the context of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Chairperson Youssouf and his delegation held high-level meetings with European Union leaders, the UN Secretary-General, and representatives from the private sector.

These meetings focused on advancing Africa's priorities and strengthening global cooperation, following the framework of the African Union Agenda 2063.
