Houthi Maritime Threat Escalates as Saudi Oil Tankers Alter Course, Raising Fresh Fears for Global Shipping

Berbera (WDN)- Three large crude oil tankers departing Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu oil terminal dramatically altered their routes on Tuesday, steering toward the Suez Canal instead of transiting the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, following the maritime threat issued by Yemen’s Houthi movement.

The sudden change in course came shortly after the Houthis announced what they described as a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, warning international shipping companies against transporting crude oil or commercial cargo to or from Saudi ports.

In a strongly worded statement, the group declared that any vessel engaged in trade with Saudi ports could be considered a legitimate military target, regardless of its location. The warning has intensified concerns over the security of one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.

The Bab al-Mandab Strait, which links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, serves as a vital gateway for global commerce and Middle Eastern energy exports. Any disruption along the route carries significant implications for international shipping, energy markets, and supply chains.
