Baidoa (HOL) — At least 148 wounded people have been treated at four hospitals following heavy fighting in Baidoa, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported Wednesday.
ICRC teams recorded 106 wounded people at two public hospitals and another 42 at private medical facilities, according to Antoine Grand, the organization’s head of delegation in Somalia.
The Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS) evacuated wounded people during the violence, while the ICRC continued working with the organization to assist those affected, Grand said.
“We urge all parties to take precautions to spare civilians,” he added.
The ICRC did not provide a death toll or identify the wounded as civilians or combatants.
The latest figures provide one of the clearest indications yet of the scale of casualties from fighting that erupted Monday in and around Baidoa.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) also reported that a health facility was severely damaged, a healthcare worker was killed and an ambulance was looted during Monday’s fighting. Two medical workers working alongside MSF teams were robbed, and one was injured.
The violence marked the third major outbreak of fighting in Baidoa since Aug. 17.
MSF recorded 94 wounded people following clashes on Aug. 17, including 29 women and 20 children, with four deaths. Another round of fighting on Sept. 3 sent 71 wounded people to Bay Regional Hospital, including 15 women and 12 children, while one death was recorded.
Monday’s fighting involved forces loyal to former South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen and federal and regional forces defending the administration in Baidoa.
Federal and regional authorities have accused Laftagareen-aligned forces of fighting alongside al-Shabab, while Laftagareen’s group denies links to the militant group and says its forces are fighting to restore what it considers South West State’s legitimate administration.
The competing battlefield claims have not been independently verified.
