In Loving Memory of Axmed Cali Cigaal: A Timeless Voice of Somali Music and Theatre

The Somali people, the global Somali diaspora, and lovers of Somali arts have lost one of their brightest cultural icons. On July 31, 2026, Axmed Cali Cigaal, one of the most influential figures in the history of Somali music and theatre, passed away in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a brief hospitalization. He was in his late 70s.

His passing marks the end of a remarkable artistic journey that spanned more than five decades and helped shape the golden age of Somali performing arts. As a singer, melodist, ‘oudist, and actor, Axmed Cali Cigaal left behind an enduring legacy that continues to inspire artists and audiences across Somalia and throughout the Somali diaspora.

Born in Wardheer, Cigaal entered Somali cultural life in 1967 while still a young student. From childhood, he was captivated by the songs broadcast on Radio Muqdisho and Radio Hargeysa, carefully studying the voices and styles of the country’s finest performers. That early passion blossomed into an extraordinary career that earned him a place among the greatest artists in the history of Somali theatrical music.
