University of the Community Launches the Community Innovation Center

Muqdisho – The Somali National University (JUS) has officially launched the Community Innovation Center (SNAIC) , which is designed to enhance research, education, innovation, and the development of intellectual capacity in the innovation sector. The launch event was attended by officials from government agencies, universities in the country, technology experts, and innovators.

This launch is significant at this time, as it represents a new step for Somalia towards digital transformation and the use of modern technology, with the innovation sector becoming one of the most important technologies currently developing the economy, education, health, and governance.

The center will be a leading hub for the university in developing the innovation sector, supporting the development of local solutions contributing to national progress. It will focus on enhancing research, improving the quality of Somali experts, supporting innovation, and participating in the formulation of policies and governance processes in the innovation sector.

Its activities will be based on key areas of research, including machine learning, natural language processing, data science, computer vision, robotics, and ethics in innovation. Experts from the Somali National University are particularly skilled in Somali language processing and voice, which are crucial for the development of the innovation sector.

The center will also provide educational programs, vocational training, research initiatives, and innovative activities aimed at enhancing the knowledge and skills of students, researchers, and professionals. It will specifically focus on promoting the use of this technology in education, health, agriculture, governance, and economic growth.

The plans for SNAIC include short training courses in innovation, certificate and diploma programs, and collaboration with universities to develop the innovation curriculum at the university level. Additionally, the center is expected to support Somali entrepreneurs and innovators by providing opportunities to create companies and innovation-based solutions.

The launch event was attended by officials from some government agencies, universities in the country, higher education stakeholders, technology experts, and other interested parties.
