The United Nations has begun evacuating 11,000 fishermen stranded in the Strait of Hormuz

After the start of the war between the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, Tehran completely closed the waterway, causing ships to become stranded there.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has begun evacuating more than 11,000 fishermen stranded in the Strait of Hormuz following a mutual agreement signed by the United States and Iran to end the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez stated in a speech released on Tuesday that the operation will be carried out "in close cooperation with Iran, Oman, all other coastal countries in the region, the United States, and shipping companies."

However, the number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz has increased since the temporary agreement was signed last week, with the maritime transport data agency Kpler reporting that at least 36 commercial vessels crossed the waterway on Monday, the highest number of traffic there since the war began.

According to the Ministry of Defense of Oman, the evacuation process under the IMO plan, which has been debated for months, will be carried out in phases.
