Somalia Marks 66th Anniversary of Independence and Union in Mogadishu

Mogadishu marked the 66th anniversary of 1 July with a national celebration attended by the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, commemorating the country’s independence and unification.

The date marks the independence of Somalia’s southern regions and their union with the northern regions, an event that led to the establishment of the Republic of Somalia.

As part of the ceremony, President Mohamud laid a wreath at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier in tribute to Somalis who lost their lives during the struggle for independence and national unity.

In remarks delivered during the event, the president emphasized the importance of remembering the country’s history and the sacrifices made in pursuit of freedom, unity and statehood.
