Bosaso (Somalia Today) — The United States plans to expand CIA operations in Somalia’s Puntland region and turn its presence at Bosaso airport into a military base capable of launching air strikes and surveillance missions from the strategic Gulf of Aden port, Drop Site News reported .
The planned expansion would mark a significant increase in the US security footprint in Puntland, Somalia’s semi-autonomous northeastern federal member state, where American air power has supported a major offensive against Islamic State militants.
Five regional security officials told Drop Site News that the current US presence at Bosaso airport consists of an intelligence and liaison “office” used by US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the Central Intelligence Agency.
AFRICOM personnel there currently coordinate requests for air support between Puntland forces and the main US military hub in neighbouring Djibouti, they said. Once the new facility is complete, US aircraft would be able to conduct combat and surveillance missions directly from Bosaso.
