U.S. Strengthens Rapid-Response Forces in Kismayo, Somalia

Kismayo, Somalia (WDN) — The United States military has conducted a major training exercise in Kismayo aimed at strengthening the readiness of its East African Response Force (EARF), highlighting Washington’s focus on rapid military response and force protection in southern Somalia, where Al-Shabaab maintains some of its most important operational strongholds.

The exercise was conducted at the U.S. Cooperative Security Location Kismayo on August 18, 2026, with the U.S. military releasing details on September 1. It brought together elements of the East African Response Force, operating under the Combined Joint Task Force–Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), and U.S. Army National Guard personnel.

The training focused on base defense and rapid-response operations, including the ability to reinforce U.S. personnel and facilities during a sudden security threat. According to the U.S. military, the Kismayo exercise tested the ability of EARF personnel to rapidly deploy, establish defensive positions and operate effectively in an unfamiliar environment. The exercise involved the movement of EARF personnel into Kismayo aboard a KC-130J Super Hercules, demonstrating the force’s ability to deploy rapidly by air.

The location of the exercise is strategically significant, the port city of Kismayo, Jubaland, Somalia. Kismayo is a major coastal city in southern Somalia and provides access to the Lower Juba region and surrounding areas where Al-Shabaab has maintained a longstanding presence. Its position gives the United States a potentially important platform for protecting its personnel while maintaining the ability to respond quickly to security developments across southern Somalia.
