The Minister of Planning Discusses the Ministerial Level Meeting of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

The Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development of the Federal Government of Somalia, Maxamuud Cabdiraxmaan Faarax (Beenebeene), delivered an official speech at the Ministerial Level Meeting of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), presenting to the international community the progress Somalia has made in the areas of economy, social development, security, governance, and the rule of law.

The Minister highlighted the historic achievements the country has made in economic reform, state-building, and democratization, mentioning the completion of the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Completion Point, the lifting of the United Nations arms embargo, the implementation of the first one-person, one-vote elections in over 50 years, Somalia's election to the United Nations Security Council, and the successes achieved in the liberation of areas previously held by Al-Shabaab.

The Minister also stated that the National Transformation Plan (NTP 2025–2029) is the guiding pathway for the country's progress, serving as a foundation for transitioning to sustainable development based on economic growth, investment, and national leadership, while gradually moving away from dependence on humanitarian aid.

Minister Beenebeene added that Somalia has made significant progress in data-driven planning, strengthening the national statistical system, and developing evidence-based decision-making, which has enhanced the monitoring and evaluation of progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In conclusion, the Minister called on development partners to further strengthen their cooperation with Somalia and to turn their commitments into tangible actions to support the country's development priorities.
