The Tension in Baydhabo Rises Again as Laftagareen Supporters Seen on the Outskirts of the City

Baydhabo – The security situation in the city of Baydhabo has once again escalated, as military movements between the forces supporting the South West Leader, Sheikh Aadan Maxamed Nuur (Madoobe), and troops loyal to the former president of South West, Cabdicasiis Xasan Maxamed Laftagareen, intensify.

Local reports have indicated that forces loyal to Laftagareen have recently approached areas surrounding Baydhabo, raising concerns that fighting may erupt in the city once again.

Baydhabo has previously experienced clashes between these sides, with a heavy battle erupting in the city that lasted several hours. Reports at that time indicated that gunfire and mortars were heard in various parts of the city, while the side supporting Laftagareen claimed to have taken control of parts of the city, although this claim has not been independently verified.

The tension comes as both sides continue to dispute the administration and political future of South West. Laftagareen has previously stated that he will continue operations he has termed the liberation of South West, while the administration led by Sheikh Aadan Madoobe insists that it is the governing authority in Baydhabo.

Other reports indicate that forces loyal to Laftagareen have conducted military movements within the city; however, information regarding whether they have taken control of buildings or used unmanned aerial vehicles has yet to receive independent confirmation. The Federal Government of Somalia and the administration of Sheikh Aadan Madoobe have not yet issued an official statement confirming the claims regarding a new battle that reportedly began today in Baydhabo.

The tension in Baydhabo has recently become a recurring issue, as the political and social sides of South West State are making efforts to seek a peaceful resolution. The Council for Peace, Unity, and Development of South West State recently stated that it has held meetings with both sides, urging that a ceasefire and dialogue be established to end the conflict.

The situation in the city remains sensitive, as the people of Baydhabo face fears that the resurgence of fighting could impact security, daily life, and social services.
