An arrest that raised more questions than answers

Garrowe – (WDN ) – In the early hours of the morning, police in Garowe detained Suweys Jama Mahmoud Gacayte, a well-known Puntland journalist whose reporting has largely focused on public opinion, social issues, and entertainment.

According to local sources, officers from the Puntland Police Force arrived at her residence in Garowe and took her into custody. By Wednesday evening, authorities had still not publicly disclosed the reason for her arrest, fueling speculation and concern among journalists and civil society groups across Puntland.

Gacayte’s detention quickly triggered a wave of condemnation from media professionals, many of whom described the arrest as alarming given the absence of any official explanation. Colleagues say she is widely recognized for giving ordinary citizens a platform to express their views and for covering issues that resonate with the public.
