Fierce Fighting Near Balcad Highlights Somalia’s Struggle to Dislodge Al-Shabaab

Mogadishu (WDN) — Heavy fighting has erupted in Basra, near Balcad in Middle Shabelle, after Somali government forces launched an assault on an Al-Shabaab position in a strategically important area linking central and southern Somalia.

The fighting reportedly involved repeated exchanges of heavy weapons, while government forces are said to have deployed drones against Al-Shabaab positions. Casualties have reportedly been sustained by both sides, although the number of dead and wounded has not been independently verified.

Basra’s importance lies in its location. The area sits along a key corridor connecting Balcad and Afgooye, close to routes linking Mogadishu with Middle and Lower Shabelle. Al-Shabaab has maintained a presence in this wider area for years, allowing the group to exert pressure over movement between major towns.

The security situation along the Balcad–Jowhar corridor illustrates the extent of the government’s limited control. Despite Jowhar being the capital of Hirshabelle and relatively close to Mogadishu, security concerns have made road travel difficult, with government officials frequently relying on air transport to reach the city.
