Mogadishu’s “forced” eviction Turns into War

The demolition of homes in Tookiyo neighbourhood, in Mogadishu’s Yaqshiid district, has triggered tensions and clashes between government forces and local residents who opposed the operation. The demolitions began around midnight and were still continuing, with local reports saying nearly 10 people had been injured in the confrontation.

The operation has raised concerns among residents over the fate of families living in the area and renewed a wider dispute over land ownership and evictions in parts of Mogadishu. Residents say they have lived in Tookiyo for decades and are demanding clarity over the legal basis for the demolitions.

Government forces were accompanied by workers carrying tools used to dismantle the corrugated iron roofing of homes, according to residents and local reports. Several houses occupied by civilians were reportedly targeted during the operation.

Tensions escalated when some residents attempted to prevent the demolitions. The confrontation reportedly led to violence between the security forces and residents, with reports of gunfire in the area.
