Galdogob (WDN) – Puntland and Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State (DDS) marked another milestone in cross-border security cooperation on Tuesday after Puntland Police formally handed over a murder suspect to security authorities from the Somali Regional State, underscoring the growing partnership between the two neighboring administrations in combating cross-border crime.
The suspect, Xiddig Siciid Sheekh Xirsi, is accused of involvement in the killing of Abdi Mahmoud Wayrah, an incident that occurred on October 8, 2018. The extradition ceremony took place in the border town of Galdogob and was led by the Commander of Puntland Police in Mudug Region, Colonel Mahmoud Muse Bille (Fardafuul). Receiving the suspect on behalf of Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State was Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi Ibrahim Mahmoud, Commander of the Doolo Regional Police Command.
Following the handover, the two commanders addressed a joint press conference attended by senior police officials, including the Acting Commander of the Galdogob Police Station. Both officials described the transfer as a practical demonstration of the increasingly close security partnership between Puntland and the Somali Regional State, emphasizing their shared commitment to ensuring that criminal suspects cannot evade justice by crossing international borders.
They stressed the importance of maintaining continuous cooperation through intelligence sharing, coordinated law enforcement operations, and the mutual extradition of suspects wanted by either side. Officials noted that such collaboration is essential not only for bringing fugitives to justice but also for strengthening regional security and combating organized crime, human trafficking, arms smuggling, and other cross-border criminal activities that affect communities on both sides of the frontier.
