Somalia, US discuss strengthening strategic partnership in New York

NEW YORK, United States — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia in New York to discuss strengthening strategic relations and cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, focused on bilateral relations, shared priorities and areas of mutual interest, Somalia’s presidency said.

The two officials exchanged views on ways to further expand cooperation between Somalia and the United States across a range of areas.

Hassan Sheikh thanked the US government for its support to Somalia, particularly in state-building, security and the development of government institutions.

The Somali president stressed the importance of further strengthening the partnership between Mogadishu and Washington, according to the statement.

The meeting came as world leaders and senior officials gathered in New York for the UN General Assembly, where security, development and regional stability are among the key issues under discussion.

Somalia has maintained close security and diplomatic ties with the United States, which has supported efforts to strengthen Somali state institutions and security forces.

The two sides did not immediately announce any new agreements following the meeting.
