Baydhabo, June 10, 2026 – The election of the leader of the South West State of Somalia (KGS) is currently taking place directly in the city of Baydhabo, with 92 members of the electoral council present in the hall, and there are two candidates in the race, Sheikh Aadan Mohamed Noor Madoobe and Abdikasiis Hassan Mohamed Jawaari, while the third candidate Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden is absent.

This election is of great importance to South West, which is one of the largest federal member states in Somalia, and it represents an important step towards strengthening democracy and representation at the regional level. The outcome is expected to affect the stability of the region and the relationship between the federal member state and the federal government.

The electoral committee has stated that the first round will be decided by a simple majority, meaning that any candidate who receives the most votes can win the election, without needing to secure 50% plus one vote.

Members of parliament are casting their votes secretly, with the committee explaining that clear procedures are in place to prevent corruption. Candidate Sheikh Aadan spoke in the hall after casting his vote, urging the members to choose someone who represents the interests of the public.

On the other hand, Abdikasiis Jawaari promised to continue building institutions and improving public services if he wins. In the coming hours, the results are expected to be announced, as the people of South West are keenly watching the polling stations.
