Somalia Police Issues Statement on Mother and Child Neglect at a Hospital in Mogadishu

The Banaadir Regional Police Command has provided details about an incident that occurred at the Mogadishu Hospital in the Yaqshid district, related to a mother named Zamzam Maxamuud Cilmi and a son she gave birth to on September 20, 2026.

According to the police, Zamzam went to the hospital on September 19, where she underwent surgery, and the following day she gave birth to a son. It was reported that the mother's family, described as poor, was unable to pay for medical expenses and accommodation, which led to a dispute between the family and the hospital administration.

As stated in the police press release, the hospital administration filed a complaint against the child's father, who was arrested in connection with the debts owed to the hospital.

On the other hand, the mother and her child were still inside the hospital, with their accommodation costs continuing to accrue.

On September 28, the Office of the Attorney General of the Nation issued a preliminary order, directing that the mother and her child be rescued from their situation, following legal procedures.

The police stated that they delivered the order to the hospital administration and informed them that the mother and child should be released.

According to the police command, the hospital administration refused to release the mother and her child, insisting that they would not be released until the owed amount was paid.

The police reported that at that time the mother was facing a medical condition related to what they described as neglect, and it was also reported that she had been in a state of isolation in the hospital for several days without food.

The prosecution has, according to the police, ordered the immediate rescue of the mother and child, while the child's father remains under hospital administration. When forces were dispatched to execute the order, there was a misunderstanding between the forces and the hospital administration, which later escalated into violence.

The police command stated that the situation arose from a refusal to comply with the order and the use of weapons, which led the forces to bring their weapons inside the hospital to execute the order and rescue the mother and child.

The police indicated that this action came at a time when the mother was in a critical medical condition and was isolated inside the hospital.

The Banadir Regional Police Command also clarified that carrying weapons into public places, especially healthcare facilities, is not permitted, and stated that this incident is being investigated specifically.

The police pointed out that the investigation will determine the responsibility of the parties involved in the incident and anyone who committed an illegal act or error related to the incident.

The hospital administration and anyone found to have committed an illegal act, as stated by the police command, will be referred to the judicial authorities, with the law being applied accordingly.

This incident came at a time when there was a debate regarding the condition of the mother and her child, the medical expenses owed by the family, the father's arrest, and how the prosecution's order was executed.
