Somalia's Children to Receive Protection and Dignity in New Centers

Mogadishu, June 18, 2026 – The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs of the Federal Government of Somalia, with the support of UNICEF, today approved a plan to evaluate 111 privately-run rehabilitation centers located in Mogadishu, to strengthen oversight, improve care standards, and ensure that children and youth receive appropriate protection and support.

This evaluation is particularly important for Somali children, many of whom live in unmonitored centers lacking health and safety standards. This new information will help the government to develop plans to enhance child protection, while also promoting family care as the most suitable approach.

“This evaluation plan will provide us with important information about the status of private rehabilitation centers,” said the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. “We want to ensure that every child receives care that protects their dignity, rights, and future.”

The Minister added that the government is committed to working with UNICEF and other organizations to strengthen the child protection system and create sustainable solutions based on human rights.

UNICEF stated that it is guided by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Child Protection Framework, and will continue to support the government to strengthen child protection systems. Experts have indicated that this information will help reduce the number of children living in non-compliant centers.

Recently, officials announced that in the coming days they will conduct training to enhance the capacity of staff at rehabilitation centers, to ensure that children are treated in accordance with international principles.
