Sunday 16 Aug 2025 {HMC} The Federal Government of Somalia has announced that the national airline Somali Airlines will operate its first flight in September of this year, marking a significant step towards the revival of the national airline.

The government has not yet provided further details about the first flight. There is also significant skepticism as the government has failed several times in its claims.

The Somali people have long awaited to see an aircraft bearing the Somali flag flying between countries around the world. The return of Somali Airlines could also represent an important development in aviation and international connectivity for Somalia.

The international aviation market in Somalia is also expected to expand. Airlines from Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Rwanda are planning to join the international airlines operating in Somalia.

The Omani airline SalamAir has announced that it will start direct flights between Muscat and Mogadishu on September 3, 2026, twice a week.

Qatar Airways has already been among the international airlines operating in Somalia, alongside Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, EgyptAir, Air Djibouti, and others. Turkish Airlines has played a particularly visible role in connecting Somalia with the world, having resumed its flights to Mogadishu 16 years ago, at a time when the country was still in a very difficult security situation and ongoing conflicts.

If the plan to revive Somali Airlines is successful, Somalia will once again have a national airline, bringing back an aircraft bearing the Somali flag to the skies after many years of absence.
