The War in Ethiopia Intensifies, and the TLF Group Captures Three Airports

Friday, 25 Sep 2026 {HMC} The Federal Government and TPLF are blaming each other for the outbreak of the new war. Tigray officials have stated that they are defending against a federal attack, while Addis Ababa has accused TPLF of launching attacks from Tigray and spreading to Amhara and Afar.

The Ethiopian military has stated that it has carried out a counter-offensive, claiming to have killed 272 Tigray fighters and wounded 260 others. This number has not been independently verified.

The tension comes days after seven armed groups, including TPLF, Amhara Fano National Movement, and Oromo Liberation Army, announced a new alliance against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.

The Ethiopian government has also accused Eritrea of supporting some of these groups. Eritrea has previously denied similar accusations, and there is no independent verification of the new claims.

The African Union has warned of the worsening situation and called on the parties to return to the Pretoria agreement.

Residents of Mekelle and other areas have begun to stockpile food and cash, while others are fleeing from the conflict zones, according to reports by AP.

The capture of the three airports, the ongoing fighting spreading to Amhara and Afar, and the emergence of the new alliance of armed groups have put Ethiopia in one of the most dangerous security phases since the end of the Tigray war in 2022.
