The Somali Government Claims Readiness for Dialogue with Al-Shabaab

The Federal Government of Somalia has stated that it is ready for dialogue with Al-Shabaab members, if the group takes steps to show that it has renounced the ideology that the government has described as erroneous, and is prepared to seek a peaceful resolution to the country's conflict.

Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Mr. Hamse Abdi Barre, who gave an interview to one of the local television stations, stated that there is currently no political or dialogue relationship between the government and Al-Shabaab, but what exists is war and armed confrontation.

However, the Prime Minister stated that the government is always ready to talk, if Al-Shabaab takes a genuine step towards dialogue.

He pointed out that officials and former members of Al-Shabaab have today joined government agencies and national forces, which he said shows that those who renounce the group's ideology can have the opportunity to reintegrate into society.

The Prime Minister also stated that the government welcomes anyone who renounces Al-Shabaab's ideology, noting that the path to reconciliation and community integration is open to those who wish to avoid conflict.

On the other hand, he stated that if Al-Shabaab renounces what he described as its extremist ideology, and accepts peace and the system of governance, then it may become possible to find a path for dialogue and political resolution.

The government's statement comes at a time when Somalia is conducting military operations against Al-Shabaab, while on the other hand, the government has repeatedly stated that it is important to create pathways for individuals leaving the group to reintegrate into society.
