Galkacyo Killing Renews Calls to End Somalia’s Cycle of Clan Revenge

Galkacyo (WDN) — Government officials in Mudug are conducting efforts to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing of Sheikh Ahmed Yusuf Haamay, who was shot dead in Galkacyo several days ago, as the latest killing raises renewed fears of retaliatory violence.

Regional officials said security forces are intensifying investigations and operations to locate the suspected perpetrators and establish both their identities and the motive behind the killing. The death has caused widespread grief and concern in Galkacyo, with residents and community leaders calling for the perpetrators to be brought before the courts and held accountable under the law.

But the killing also highlights a much larger problem that Somalia cannot continue to ignore: the endless cycle in which one killing is followed by revenge, another death, another retaliation and eventually another round of clan violence.

The immediate responsibility lies with the security authorities. Rather than allowing communities to pursue their own form of justice, the government must demonstrate that it has the capacity and determination to identify those responsible, arrest them and ensure that they face a transparent judicial process. A failure to do so creates a dangerous vacuum.
