National Communications Authority Holds First Meeting of the Submarine Cable Landing Technical Working Group

Nairobi, Kenya – June 22, 2026 – The National Communications Authority (HIQ), in collaboration with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), today held the first meeting of the Submarine Cable Landing Technical Working Group (TWG), which includes telecommunications companies, companies working on submarine cables, internet service providers (ISPs), and technical experts, to strengthen the resilience and sustainable development of the Submarine Cable Infrastructure in Somalia.

This workshop, which will last for two days, aims to enhance collaboration between the authority and other stakeholders in the telecommunications & technology sector, promote a shared understanding of the challenges facing the Submarine Cable sector, and propose effective measures to strengthen the resilience and reliability of high-speed internet infrastructure in the country.

During the workshop, the focus will be on managing cable faults, market competition, infrastructure development, and implementing a regulatory framework for governing Submarine Cables in our country.

The workshop will also analyze the results of a recently prepared report on the telecommunications market in Somalia, providing stakeholders the opportunity to validate key data and discuss priorities for the future development of the telecommunications sector.

The Director General of the National Communications Authority, Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, speaking at the opening of the workshop, highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration to enhance the resilience of digital infrastructure.
