High-Stakes Somalia Talks Open in Mogadishu as Nation Awaits Breakthrough After Months of Failed Mediation

Mogadishu (WDN) – A new round of high-stakes political talks opened in Mogadishu on Tuesday, bringing together the Federal Government of Somalia and the opposition Somali Future Council in what many observers regard as one of the country’s most consequential negotiations in recent years.

The closed-door meeting, from which the media has been excluded, comes amid mounting domestic and international pressure to resolve Somalia’s prolonged constitutional and political crisis. At the center of the discussions are the country’s electoral framework, constitutional review, power-sharing arrangements, and the management of the ongoing political transition.

Unlike previous rounds of dialogue, the negotiations are being facilitated with the direct involvement of Turkey, ambassadors representing several Western nations, the European Union, and the United Nations, all of whom are expected to play both mediation and guarantor roles throughout the process.

Their participation reflects growing international concern that Somalia’s political deadlock is becoming increasingly difficult to resolve without sustained external facilitation and guarantees for the implementation of any eventual agreement. Yet expectations remain cautious.
