Kenyan Minister’s Remarks on Historical Discrimination Against Somali Community Spark National Backlash

Nairobi (WDN) — Remarks by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Barre Duale, have ignited a fierce political debate, drawing strong reactions across the country—particularly among members of the Kikuyu community—after he accused previous Kenyan administrations of systematically discriminating against ethnic Somalis.

Speaking at a public event, Duale alleged that successive governments led by former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Mwai Kibaki deliberately denied thousands of young Kenyan Somalis access to national identity cards, effectively limiting their ability to fully participate in the country’s civic and economic life.

“Previous governments intentionally discriminated against Somalis by denying our youth national identity cards,” Duale said. “They should remember that Somalis are a nation of nearly 40 million people across the region, while they number only around three million and are confined within Kenya.”

The comments immediately triggered widespread criticism and intense public debate, with many Kenyans arguing that references to ethnic population size risk inflaming longstanding sensitivities surrounding identity and national cohesion.
