Trump Administration Announces Plans to Revoke Citizenship from Individuals Including Somalis

The Donald Trump administration has announced it will revoke citizenship from individuals found guilty of crimes including healthcare fraud, mobile phone fraud, and other illegal activities.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) stated on Monday that it will revoke the citizenship of 17 American citizens who have been convicted of various crimes.

According to a statement from the Department, the 17 individuals were born in countries including Somalia, Cuba, Haiti, China, and India.

They have been found guilty of crimes including healthcare fraud, mobile phone fraud, and schemes to manipulate stock prices.

The DOJ accused these individuals of concealing their criminal activities while applying for citizenship.

Revocation of citizenship is a rare occurrence in the United States, and such a decision can only be made by a federal court.

There are defendants and convicts originally from Somalia who have previously been prosecuted for issues related to healthcare fraud and child welfare.

Citizenship by birth is protected by the U.S. Constitution; however, the Trump administration is also attempting to reverse the birthright citizenship granted to individuals born in the U.S. to undocumented parents.
