What are the tasks ahead for Aadan Madoobe, the new president of South West State?

The inauguration ceremony for the leader of the South West State, recently elected Sheikh Aadan Mohamed Noor (Sheikh Aadan Madoobe), was held yesterday in the city of Baydhabo.

The event was attended by officials from the federal government, including the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre.

Sheikh Aadan Mohamed Noor was inaugurated yesterday in Baydhabo after being elected to the position of leader of the state by the parliament of South West State last month.

Aadan received 88 votes in a secret ballot held by parliament members on June 10, making him the new leader of South West State.

The chairman stated that one vote was lost.

The candidate competing against Aadan Madoobe was announced by the speaker of the house to have received only 1 vote.

Aadan was competing against candidate Abdiqasiis Mohamed Osman Jawaari, who is the son of the late former speaker of the Somali parliament. Meanwhile, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aadan, who was also a candidate, announced that he had withdrawn from the race due to "violations of agreements".

He stated that an agreement made with the election committee and the interim leader of South West State was violated, which he claimed was 'to prevent parliament members from using mobile phones at the polling station'.

Sharif previously served as the president of South West State before resigning in November 2018.

"What happened today in South West is a significant achievement for the Somali people. The people of South West have shown civility and confidence by following the country's constitution, and they held a one-person, one-vote election in 13 out of the 18 districts that make up the state," he said.

He stated, "This is an example for those who believe that a one-person, one-vote election is not possible."
