The European Union Donates €18 Million in Humanitarian Aid to Ethiopia

The European Union has announced a new grant of €18 million aimed at addressing the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia, as conflicts and military movements in the northern part of the country are increasing the needs of civilians, displacement, and challenges to delivering aid.

This new grant will support those affected by conflicts and humanitarian conditions, and the funds will be used in key areas such as food, nutrition, health, water and sanitation, shelter, protection of vulnerable people, and education in emergency situations.

This new funding brings the total humanitarian support the European Union has provided to Ethiopia in 2026 to €61 million . However, the €18 million announced now is new funding, while the other funds consist of previous allocations the European Union had earmarked for Ethiopia this year.

The European Commission stated that the decision to provide this new support is related to the deteriorating situation in northern Ethiopia, where fighting and military movements have affected civilians and access to basic services.

The European Union also noted the situation in the cities of Mekelle, Axum, and Shire , and reports of airstrikes carried out by Ethiopian military drones.

The security situation is also complicating the operations of humanitarian agencies, as the destruction of roads, disruption of communications, and fighting in key areas pose challenges to assessing the real needs and delivering aid to those affected by the situation.

The European Union has called on the relevant parties to de-escalate the tension, protect civilians, and allow humanitarian agencies to reach those in need of assistance safely and without hindrance.

This call comes at a time when humanitarian needs are increasing, particularly in areas affected by conflict and displacement.

The worsening situation in Ethiopia could also impact the entire Horn of Africa , which includes Somalia and Sudan among the countries facing significant humanitarian needs.

As global humanitarian funding is limited, the increase in needs in Ethiopia could affect how donors prioritize support for countries in the region.

This €18 million donation is part of the EU's efforts to address the humanitarian situation in Ethiopia, prioritizing the protection of civilians and the continuation of essential services as conflicts and displacement escalate the need for assistance.
